At WPM Pathology, we are committed to providing high-quality pathology services with integrity and transparency. Unfortunately, scammers are increasingly targeting healthcare consumers with fraudulent calls and deceptive billing schemes. We want to help you recognize these scams and protect yourself from potential fraud.
How the Scam Works
A patient, “Emily,” recently received a call from someone claiming to represent WPM Pathology. The caller stated that there was an unpaid medical bill and requested immediate payment over the phone. Emily was caught off guard, as she had never received a bill from us. Sensing something was off, she hung up and contacted our office directly—confirming that the call was a scam.
These fraudulent calls often involve:
- A caller impersonating a medical provider, lab, or billing department.
- A demand for immediate payment, sometimes with threats of service disruptions or legal action.
- Requests for sensitive personal or financial information over the phone.
How Scammers Obtain Your Information
Fraudsters may acquire patient information through data breaches, phishing attacks, or by using publicly available data. They may also spoof phone numbers to make it appear as if the call is coming from a legitimate medical provider.
How to Protect Yourself
- Verify Before You Pay: If you receive a call about an unpaid medical bill, hang up and contact WPM Pathology directly using our official phone number.
- Be Cautious of Urgent Requests: Scammers use pressure tactics to trick you into making quick decisions. Legitimate medical providers will always give you time to review and verify billing statements.
- Protect Your Personal Information: Never share sensitive details like your Social Security number, insurance policy number, or banking information with an unsolicited caller.
- Check Your Statements: Regularly review your insurance statements and medical bills for any suspicious charges or inaccuracies.
- Report Suspicious Calls: If you suspect a scam, report it to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) at www.reportfraud.ftc.gov or call (877) 382-4357.
WPM Pathology’s Commitment to Your Security
At WPM Pathology, we take patient security seriously. We will never ask for sensitive payment details over an unsolicited call. If you have any concerns about a bill or received a suspicious call, please contact our office immediately.
By staying informed and vigilant, you can protect yourself from falling victim to medical billing scams. If you ever have doubts about a call, trust your instincts—hang up and verify with us directly.
